The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) is a public corporation that was founded in 1941. Our Mission is to provide electric energy services to customers in the most efficient, cost-effective and reliable manner in harmony with the environment. Our Vision is to ensure that PREPA's operations are competitive to similar corporations around the world. PREPA produces, transmits and distributes, practically, all the electric power used in Puerto Rico. It is one of the major public electric power corporations in the United States.
PREPA is directed by a Government Board, comprised of nine members. Seven of its members are appointed by the Governor of Puerto Rico with the approval of the Senate. Two of them represent the clients, who elect them both through an election supervised by the Consumer Affairs Department.

An Executive Director, appointed by the Government Board, directs the operational and administrative organization of this public corporation.

Operational areas and support areas are:

• Generation, Transmission, and Distribution
• Finance, and Customer Service
• Environmental Protection, and Planning
• Human Resources, and labor Affairs
• Legal Affairs
• Administrative Services
  

For administrative purposes, PREPA has divided the Island into seven regions, with a total of 33 customer service offices, 29 technical services offices, and 38 local offices located throughout the Island.

PREPA's work force is comprised of, approximately, 9,550 employees; among them are the unionized, managerial and executive personnel. The majority are unionized employees, who add up to close to 6,775. These employees are affiliated to four labor unions:

• Electric and Irrigation Industry Workers Unions (UTIER, by its Spanish acronym)
• Industrial and Electric Construction Worker's Insular Union (UITICE, by its Spanish acronym)
• Professional Employees Union (UEPI, by its Spanish acronym)
• Pilots Union (UPAEE, by its Spanish acronym)
